‘Would be too selfish’ – Carlos Alcaraz immediately withdraws from next event after winning US Open

Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from Spain's upcoming Davis Cup qualifier against Denmark, just days after winning the US Open.
The 22-year-old clinched his sixth Grand Slam title in Flushing Meadows on Sunday by beating fierce rival Jannick Sinner in four sets, winning 6-2 3-6 6-1 6-4.
Victory for Alcaraz in New York was significant, as it sealed his return to number one in the ATP world rankings.
But the Spaniard was not due to have long to savour the achievement.
He had been expected to represent his country this weekend, with Spain taking on Denmark in the second round of Davis Cup qualifying in Marbella.
But Alcaraz will now play no part in the tie, having opted against international duty after enduring a hectic schedule of late.
Prior to his US Open victory, the tennis star claimed the Cincinnati Open with victory over Alexander Zverev in the final.
He also contested the US Open’s revamped mixed doubles event alongside Britain's Emma Raducanu the day after his Cincinnati final.
Alcaraz then went on to win seven matches in a row on his way to singles glory, dropping just one set all tournament.
And the gruelling schedule now looks to have taken its toll, as the Spanish star confirmed he would no longer represent his country coming weekend in the Davis Cup.
Alcaraz told Cadena SER: “I feel very bad, but I'm on a very demanding tour, both mentally and physically, with a lot of matches, and I don't have time to get home and prepare in the best way possible for the Davis Cup.
“I think that would be too selfish, and other players can do better than me.
"I need rest to face the rest of the season and, above all, to be mentally calm to assimilate everything I've achieved on this tour.”
Spain will be without their second-ranked player this weekend too, with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina also withdrawing from the tie.
The duo have been replaced by Jaume Munar, Roberto Carballes Baena, and Pablo Carreno Busta.
Former world No.3 David Ferrer is captain of Spain's Davis Cup team, a role he has held since December 2022.
His side will have their work cut out against Denmark, with top 10 star Holger Rune headlining their lineup, which also includes Elmer Moeller, August Holmgren, Christian Sigsgaard and Johannes Ingildsen.
And while Alcaraz will be absent this weekend, it shouldn't be long before he gets another chance to compete in a team tournament.
He is still signed up to compete in the Laver Cup in San Francisco at the end of next week - a Ryder Cup-style team competition co-created by Roger Federer.
After this, Alcaraz is due to make his tournament debut at the Japan Open in Tokyo, before the Shanghai Masters 1000 event.
And the Murcia native revealed his next target is already the Australian Open in January, where he can complete the career Grand Slam with a maiden victory in Melbourne.
In the same interview, Alcaraz added: “Australia is always the main goal before starting the year.
"Therefore, I train hard and do preseason to try to start the year in the best possible way."
