The story of the POW-MIA Flags Collection | Ultimate Flags Store began in 1970 when Mary Hoff, a member of the National League of Families of Prisoners of War and Missing in Action, realized there was a need for a flag to represent those missing. Her husband, Navy pilot Lt. Commander Michael Hoff, went missing during the Vietnam War and she wanted to ensure that no American would be forgotten. She contacted the local flag company, Annin & Co., and their VP, Norman Rivkees, commissioned graphic designer Newt Heisley to design a flag. The black and white POW/MIA flag is a powerful symbol of American pride, honor and courage. It reminds the world that America has not and will not forget its heroes.

In 1998, the National League of Families’ POW/MIA Flag was adopted as an official emblem by Congress and passed into law. A section of the act required that it be flown six days each year: Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, and National POW/MIA Recognition Day. It must also be displayed at the White House, the United States Capitol building, and all national cemeteries. It is also required to be displayed at all major military installations, post offices, and VA medical centers.
