Tottenham finally end 17-year trophy drought with stunning Europa League final win over Man United

Ange Postecoglou has delivered on his trophy promise with Tottenham beating Manchester United in the Europa League final.

A scrappy goal claimed by Brennan Johnson was enough to see off the Red Devils and end Spurs' 17-year trophy drought.

The victory secures their first piece of silverware since winning the League Cup in 2008.

It has also secured qualification for next season's Champions League despite sitting 17th in the Premier League.

A tense night at the San Mames in Bilbao saw the only goal of the game go into the net three minutes before half-time.

Johnson ghosted in from the right to beat Luke Shaw to Pape Matar Sarr's cross.

After ricocheting off both players, the ball trickled past Andre Onana into the bottom corner.

The goal was the first goal Spurs have scored in a final since Jonathan Woodgate's winner against Chelsea back in 2008.

His goal only prompted a limp second-half response from United as Ruben Amorim's side went in search of an equaliser.

The sloppy Red Devils were unable to break down a spirited defensive display from their opponents.

Rasmus Hojlund came the closest to grabbing a leveller when he looped the ball over Guglielmo Vicario after the Spurs goalkeeper spilled the ball.

The Danish striker was denied by an acrobatic goal-line clearance from Micky van de Ven, though.

Meanwhile, calls for a penalty were later turned away after a risky sliding challenge on Luke Shaw by Pedro Porro.

And in stoppage time, Vicario palmed away a goalbound header by Luke Shaw.

Ultimately, Spurs held on to their narrow lead despite Amorim sending on Alejandro Garnacho and Joshua Zirkzee.

Their win fulfilled a promise made by Postecoglou back in September.

Following a 1-0 loss to rivals Arsenal, the Australian exclaimed: "I always win things in my second year. Nothing has changed. I don't say things unless I believe them."

Despite a disappointing league campaign, he has now lived up to that claim eight months later.

It is the third time Spurs have won the competition after previous victories in 1972 and 1984.

The triumph will also see them return to the Champions League after a two-year absence.

They will also compete in the UEFA Super Cup final against either Paris Saint-Germain or Inter Milan in Udine in August.

As for United and Amorim, they will be without European football next term and could still be leapfrogged by Spurs in the Premier League table on Sunday.

Neither side can end the campaign higher than 14th heading into the final day.
