Violation of gender equity cited -

The University of Cincinnati women's rowing team is suing UC in a class action lawsuit filed Monday in U.S. District Court claiming the team's Title IX Gender Equity rights have been violated. The Education Amendments of 1972, which Title IX is a part of, prohibits discrimination based on sex in educational programs that receive federal assistance.

The lawsuit brings up issues such as the university's unfulfilled promise to build a new boathouse for the team, unequal scholarship distribution and what the rowing team contends to be the unfair treatment of the team.

As of Monday, UC's legal department called the lawsuit a surprise, saying they will handle it as any other legal claim against the university.
