Girls leading the way for STEM in Sports Academy

Milwaukee, WI - The STEM in Sports Academy, a new program in partnership with Images of Us Sports and the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee’s Human Movement Sciences and Athletic Department is changing the way girls look at Sports by preparing them for STEM related sport careers.
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, and the program's objective is for students to learn how studying the areas of STEM can be integrated with physical activity and lead to careers related to sports.
This is just the first year for the STEM in Sports Academy, which will grow each year with a developed curriculum to focus on getting more girls involved in the STEM field.  “We want to expand STEM education and career opportunities for girls and using sports is a great way to do this, says Bernell Hooker, Founder and CEO of IOU Sports.
The program's start couldn't be coming at a better time. Students will be well prepared by positioning themselves with UW Milwaukee who is a leader in sports and STEM related fields. ”We are very excited to show the girls how studying science can be fun and have direct application to sports”, said Jennifer Earl, PhD, ATC Associate Professor of Human Movement Sciences.
“There's nothing quite like this program in Wisconsin and that's saying something about our partnership with UW Milwaukee" said Hooker.
About 80 students will be on the UW Milwaukee campus to attend the May 18, 2011 STEM in Sports Academy for a full day of physical activities incorporated with STEM breakout groups such as Sport Statistics, Functional Movement Analysis and Technology and Sports Marketing.
The STEM in Sports Academy was funded in part by grants from the African American Women’s Fund Project and the Safe Alternative for Youth with support from UPS, Aramark, and Will Enterprises. IOU Sports is already seeking funding to secure and extend next year’s STEM in Sports Academy.
