By Bernell Hooker

The 2010 IOU Sports “If I were a Boy,” Girls Violence Prevention Forum was hosted by Alverno College Research Center for Women and Girls and supported by the Helen Bader Foundation, Women’s Fund of Greater Milwaukee and My Carmex

What a Big Success. Our 2nd annual Girls Violence Prevention Forum was well represented by 62 students and chaperons from community organizations and schools. In addition, we are proud that these young ladies gave up their Saturday and weathered the cold to attend…KUDOS to you all!

Whether you attended the Girls Violence Prevention at Alverno College, or not - and want a chance to get a sense of the spirit of empowering girls - take a few moments to look at the highlight videos (Part 1 and Part 2) .  See the terrific group of students in our Girls Violence Prevention Forum - discussing problems and potential solutions through the CLICK survey, girls' learning about what to expect preparing for College and learning and performing a dance routine by ReMix Dance Company.

Girls Pledge of Victory over Violence

I will value my own life, recognizing that a lack of self identity and hope for the future lay at the roots of all violence. I will reach beyond my limitations, taking concrete steps each day to uncover my real potential. I will never give up on my dreams even if they seem impossible.

I will respect all life, recognizing that violence comes in many forms. I will not isolate myself but will create an environment where others feel comfortable and can be themselves. I will see beyond superficial differences and reflect on my own behavior.

I will inspire hope in others. With courage, I will resolutely stand up against violence, be it verbal, physical or passive and teach other through my own example. I will support others and encourage them to follow their dreams.
